I thought I would post some info on the public events in Destiny. An explanation of what the public events are, from the Destiny wiki:
"A Public Event is a type of global multiplayer minigame in Destiny wherein numerous players, grouped in fireteams, work together to complete a specific objective in order to earn experience and loot, often during Patrol.
Public Events are rated after completion based on the Guardians' performance; if time runs out before the objective is met, it is a Bronze-Tier rating. If time runs out but the Guardians manage to almost complete the objective, it is a Silver-Tier rating. If the objective is completed before the timer runs out, is a Gold-Tier rating. Guardians are rewarded with Glimmer, experience, and sometimes a rare material for Gold-Tier ratings, which are rewarded instantly. Guardians can also pick up an additional reward at the postmaster if its their first gold-tier rating of the day."

Note: Sometimes instead of a Public Event, the player will recieve the message "The enemy is moving against each other", and a large group of Fallen and Hive will start fighting. Most of the enemies found in these events will be very powerful. (i.e. Hallowed Knight, Reaver Captain) Fighting in this event does not reward the player with any bonus experience.

I haven't tried this yet but this website has a countdown of all the public events. On Xbone you can snap this site in on the side and run a route to sort of farm them.

Use the app too.
"Destiny Timer" app on one's phone.
It lists all the events. But one key thing I noticed is this. If the 'event' is listed as say the "Forgotten Shore", I think you actually need to go into that map node to access it. If you go into the planet's Patrol mode, and then drive to the Forgotten Shore, the event might not be there?

The events can be quite random (of not showing) at times, hopefully it is not tied to whether you are playing Patrol or not. But thanks a lot for the tip. I just realized that one good way to get right to the spot is to pick the story/strike missions that happen in that area. I don't have to go into Patrol and then try to figure out how to get to the spot from where I am dropped. Duh...

Witty.
Don't go into Patrol mode when using the App. It is much more randomized.
Take this example:
MOTHYARDS *Defend the Warsat "May appear in 2m 24s".....or......"Window open for 3m 12s"
So for the above. Always go to the actual icon for the 'Mothyards' on the earth map. Do not go into Patrol mode, and then drive to the Mothyards. It is more hit or miss that way with the patrol mode.
The public event is almost always in that icon submap if you do this correctly. If you go there via that route, via the icon, it's going to be almost a 100% lock, as long as you get there BEFORE the 'may appear' timer. If you go into that area while the app says 'window open', the event may not be there, especially if someone finished it already
Typically, once you are in the map. When the above timer switches over from 'May appear' to 'Window open'...the event usually comes within about 30 seconds of the switch.
I'm using all three of my characters for this now. As long as you get a 'Gold Tier' achievement, you will get one of three items: Ascendent Energy, Ascendent Shards or Strange Coins. Guaranteed, when you go back to the tower and check your mailbox.
Tip. Make sure you always have the 'Three Gold Tier achiement' bounty up and running on all three characters, especially so if you are doing the above stuff with your characters.
Tip 2 - Try to avoid Public events where it says you have to "Kill the Target". That's the event where a higher level Captain comes down and then keeps teleporting away from you. If you are solo, lower level, and don't have rockets, he'll be hard to kill. The best events to get are 'Defend the Warsat' and Exstraction crews'

I assume you mean to pick the closest mission to the specified location?

sometimes the closest is the best, but I mean pick the actual icon.
If the event timer says 'Mothyards', go to the map icon that says 'Mothyards'. Do not go to the Patrol mode icon, and then drive your bike to area. It's more hit and miss that way.
I've had the best success using the Earth map. The missions seems much much easier there.
