Once you hit level 20 in Destiny you get to the next phase of advancement. You are pursuing legendary (purple) gears and then trying to upgrade it. To upgrade your gear you will need a variety of items, including glimmer, weapon/armor parts (from dismantling your old gear), shards, and planet materials.
This thread will be a collection of recommended methods and routes for gathering planet materials.

Here is one option for farming Spin Metal. It includes a good tip on zoning in and out of an area to reset the material and cave spawn points.
