Oh ok. I didn't realize you could buy armor from the Tower. I read one of Saggy's links on that.
"Your class vendor requires Vanguard Rank 2 for Armor pieces, Vanguard Rank 3 for Weapons.
How do you rank that up to 2 & 3? Just getting Rep and Mark pts?

Yep, you guys pretty much have it. Vanguard rep from bounties, patrol missions etc. Vanguard points from strikes. There are 2 vanguard vendors, one for armor, the guy downstairs that you have been going to through the story. You need level 2 rep to buy things and armor is 65 rep except for helmets i think is 90. The weapon guy is down the right side hall by the ship builder. Weapons require level 3 vanguard rep and 150 points for a weapon. And I believe it is 500 rep each level.
So with all that BS you can see the Queens missions are great, guaranteed purple real quick so you can save all that vanguard for other things.
The motes of light, shards, strange coins will come soon enough, thats a whole new grind. But for 13 strange coins you can buy exotic armor from Xur that has more light than any purple and for 24 strange coins you can buy a weapon of the same exotic class. Thats the boat I am in right now but dont want to buy anything until I do the weeklies and see what I get from them.

as a quick aside....
the last set of rankings is due out to today. Reddit's YoYo Clan News has their rankings coming out very shortly. This to some degree is almost more prestigious as a Top 25 rank, as it heavily takes into consideration strength of schedule, how you played, etc...yoyo follows this stuff very closely. You all are going to be pleasantly surprised.

Oh...awesome, i'll be home at 2pm PT. 5pmET. awesome.
5pm ET...mal and stone.
Do we have a third?
I will try to join you guys if possible. The 3 of us have similar goals (well, mal is much more advanced, so relatively speaking ) so we should make a good fire team. Don't wait for me though if you manage to get a 3rd player. My play time is still undeterministic at the moment. Quick update: I am on track to start playing around 3pm PT, 4pm the latest.

LET ME SAY THIS....I finally was able to put most all the pieces together last night, in figuring out how all the Destiny relationships work in regards to leveling past 20. I 'got it'. I got to give Bungie a bit of a smack in the face for making a game with such ridiculously difficult to understand processes, but whatever. I got it. It is kind of fun in a 'putting a puzzle' together sort of way (if you like puzzles)
Putting this out there for people who want the idiot guide version.
======================
I first finally got the Light stuff worked out a bit better. For new players, once you hit level 20, you CANNOT level with XP anymore. Level 1 to Level 20 is like CoD. Do shit and get XP. Once you are at Level 20, your XP won't help you level. What to do? You need "light'. You instead need to find armor pieces that have a 'Light Rating' to level up. This at first was confusing. But as you play higher, you will find Helmet, Gauntlet, Chest, and Boot armor pieces that have a +? Light Rating. I was able to almost level up three levels last night once i started soloing some Strike missions. Started as level 21, and am currently now only two light pieces away from getting to level 24. I sort of pieced together this chart, that is just some approximations (not perfect, but close)
Light Level 21 - 15 light pieces needed to be equipped, sum of all four pieces of armor you wear Light Level 22 - 30 light pieces needed.... Light level 23 - 40 light pieces needed... Light level 24 - 55 light pieces needed..... Light level 25 - not sure yet
Found this from witty
I am currently sitting with 53 light pieces, the total from my four pieces of armor. Right there almost at level 24, so 54 or 55 'light' is probably needed for Level 24. Where did I find this armor? I did the Level 22 'Tiger' Strike mission solo late last night, and picked up a my first Legendary piece of equipment as a prize, getting a 280/372 helmet, with +18 light. I then did the daily heroic mission solo and picked up some chest armor that was 256/270, +14 light. Another piece doing stuff too...all in all, i went from from like +21 light to +53. Seriously climbing.
I also figured out that annoying Vanguard Mark vs Vanguard Reputation bullshit. Vanguard is if you are doing the Player v Environment, and not doing the Crucible stuff (not playing against other people)
Your Reputation pts cannot be seen on your profile. I found that out the hard way after looking what was forever. Why? God only knows. That is dumb. But it is what it is. You need to go to EITHER your head Vanguard leader (Ikora Rey, she is at the top of the tower, by the long table), or the Roni 55-30, the Vanguard Quartermaster (he's in the north tower) The first handles your equipment, the latter gives you weapons. But when talking to either, on the left side of the screen willl be a circle that shows your Vangard Reputation level/bucket. You start out level 0.
Vangard Rank Zero - Start here, and will have already accumulated a fair amount of pts by the time you hit Level 20. Vanguard Rank One - you need to get another 1,000 Vangard Reputation Points. Vanguard Rank Two - You need another 2,000 Vanguard Reputation Points Vanguard Rank Three - You need another ? Vanguard Reputation Points
So yeah, that was hard to figure out. Here's the deal, you need to be Rank Two, before you can buy better armor from Ikora Rey. Dump the armor that has a +100 to +150 defense, and get the Legendary stuff that as a +280 to +350, as well as light. And how do you get Reputation Points? This part sucks. You get them doing a lot of stuff, like Strikes and bounties. Typically, 50 to 100 rep pts per bounty, and 25 to 50 with the Strikes. You can also trade in some of your materials you gather (spirit bloom, helium, etc..) bundles of 50 of them, for 25 rep pts. This is brutal here. You can do the math. That's around 20 to 40 'events' you need to do.
But wait, that's not all. You also need Vanguard Marks too. For example, to buy a nice piece of armor from Ikora Rey, it will also 'cost' you between 65 to 120 Marks, in addition to the above Reputation level you are. So for armor, you need to be Reputation Rank Two, as well as spend 65 to 120 Mark. Where to get Marks? Doing Strike Missions. And guess what? You typically only get 2 to 6 Marks per mission. Harder missions giving more. Good lord this is brutal. Figure on doing ten 'events' to even get in the ballpark. Getting lucky with your loot finds may be easier than accumulating Marks.
With the weapons? Same process. But you need to be Vangard Level Three to qualify to buy Legendary Weapons. Lots more grinding to get Reputation Points. Legendary weapons also cost a lot more. Expect to pay around 150 Marks to buy something decent. Lots and lots of grinding
I'm sure there is more, but that's what i pieced together. The game does not explain the above very well.

Good writeup Stone. A couple of notes. Xp is still important after 20,it still levels up your armor and weapons. Well not totally, it unlocks the levels, you still need materials to complete the level up like spin metal, helium, etc. So don't trade any of that in for points or rep because you will surely need it as soon as you do and have to spend hours gathering the shit. Another Xp tip, when you trade in bounties make sure you have whatever you want leveled equipped. Example, I have a legendary sniper rifle and also my defender sub class that I don't play with much but still need those once in a while so before I turn in my bounties I equip those and the Xp earned goes towards those. Once done reequip your normal items and get back to work.
Also there is a weekly cap on vanguard and crucible MARKS only, max 100 per week earned so watch those. How you know where you are at are around the strike and crucible play list in pick destination there will be a blue ring and red ring around those, when they get all the way around you are done.
Dismantle everything you don't need when you level up and all those shit engrams you decrypt, don't just discard. Everything you Dismantle gives you pieces of stuff you need to upgrade.

Yeah, I was playing with ChumLee and Fayt this morning. They reminded me about the equipping your stuff before cashing in a bounty. That REALLY works. Every piece equipped gets lit up like a xmas tree after the cashing in.
My present situation:
Level = 24 Light = 55 (on my four pieces of armor) Defense = 900's Vanguard Rank = 2 Vanguard Rep Pts = 425 (need 2,000) Vanguard Marks = 43? (can't remember the number) Sunsinger subcl = 1/5 way done Void subclass = 95% done.

Why am I putting this up? I was new to this MMO stuff, a totally rookie. So I am putting this up in the hopes that maybe it helps a newer clan person who is playing behind me. They can see my thought process below, how I organize how to do this stuff..... and won't be as confused as I was when starting.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday 7AM.
My Class - I am playing a Warlock
My present situation/goals
1. I am going to need MATERIALS. A number of my armor pieces below need to be upgraded, so as to increase my Light and Armor number (which is presently at 74 & 1,043). From looking at the menu, I am going to need Helium Filaments (Moon), Spin Metal (earth) Ascendent Shards (unknown?), Hadrians Essence (breaking down armor). I get those, I might max out my helmet and chest plate better, maybe pushing my Def number from 1,043 to 1,200 or so?
2. I am grinding hard on Vangard Reputation Pts and Vanguard Marks. My Vanguard level is 1, and I need about 703 rep pts to get to level two, which allows me to hopefully buy better armor (although with the stuff I am finding, I may not need to buy anything). One gets between 50 to 200 rep points per event you do...so this will come sooner than later as everything pretty much gets you Rep pts.
My Stats
Level = 20 (XP level, this is now locked).... Light Level = 25 (this is what increases to hopefully level 30) Light Pieces = 74 (# added up on my four pieces of armor - see chart listed in thread)...I am two pieces of light away from level 26! (need 76, see chart above) I also picked up an Exotic Headgear last night. Which was the Skull of Dire Hamauslaslslblahblahblah. It's stats are below. For newer people, the levels are as follows: common, uncommon, rare, Legendary & Exotic
- "Exotic" Headpiece...................... +21 - 311/402 - Gloves............................................. +15 - 202 - "Queens Guard" Chest Plate... +20 - 326/406 - Boots.............................................. +18 - 204/220 ----------------------------------------------------- ............................................................+74, 1043 /1,230 Defense = 1,043 Vanguard Rank = 1 Vanguard Rep Pts = 1,297(need 2,000 for Lv 2) - I am inching closer to Vanguard Rank 2, which allows me to buy armor Vanguard Marks = 69 Sunsinger subcl = 40% way done Void subclass = 95% done. Weapons: - Picked up my first Legendary Weapon. Super Pox Pulse rifle. 248/300 Damage. All my other weapons are just rare.

Awesome, Stone. You and I are in the same place. I'm also level 27, and need a shit ton of ascendent shards. I plan to get my exotic armor this weekend through Xur. I am also working on an exotic weapon bounty to get an exotic machine gun. I have a legendary scout rifle and two legendary rocket launchers.
I've done a little more PvP recently and have enjoyed it more. I hate to admit it, but I gave started camping more. If you crouch walk, you don't show up on radar (I believe, anyway - that is how Halo used to work).
Looking forward to partying up more now that the solo material farming is winding down...

I thought the radar popped up if you aim down the sights?
I have three legendary weapons. I suppose one more wouldn't hurt. But I don't have 26 strange coins to buy a weapon. I am still at 13. So I guess I need to get more coins.
I need to grind two more material runs, to level up my boots. Helium and Spin Metal. That should put me four Light pieces away from Level 28. To get any more Light, like you, I am going to need the AS's too. This part is a bummer. Level 29 (109 Light Pieces) is right there in my grasp maxing out all my present armor ,,,,IF I can somehow find 58 Ascendent Shard pieces.
That is mind numbing. Setting aside getting lucky on events, the only way I see this happening is breaking down Legendary armor pieces. I need 65 marks to buy a Legendary Piece, which then yields 2 AS's. Do the math (...brain racing here)...that's 1,855 marks needed. At 100 marks a week, that's 19 weeks.
Let's say I get lucky and get some random AS's pieces here and there each session, like find one AS a night & playing every single night...that puts my grind at six weeks.
That is pretty distressing, doing the math right now.
Unless I am missing something....this is stupid.

Agreed, the grind for AS is stupid. I think the real goal is getting better gear from doing the raid. I am actually waiting to spend shards until I have a raid dropped item. Those have higher light levels than standard legendaries, so they will allow you to level up higher.
Level 27 is acceptable for running the raid. Not ideal, but acceptable.

What is a typical armor dropped in a raid? (i guess that is what you are calling Raid gear?)
