So here's the deal. I am at level 21. But I don't know what to do now. Some of you keep putting up these long ass post that just toss around dungeons & dragons phraseology, and it's just so damn confusing. Engrams, armor, light, darkness, cults, swords, etc...Makes me confused as fuck. Surely there are others in this clan who feel my pain? Help me out in this thread. With Destiny 'idiot' speak, that can get me there ....and maybe others will benefit too. I know there are others like Coronaman, surely he is going through this too.
Level 1 to 20
I go this part down. 1 to 20. Get XP and level up. Just like CoD. And one can do it in five ways.
- Do bounties, where you get 2,500 to 5,000 for doing small little jobs/achievement on planets or in the crucible. - Do the planetary on-rails story line missions (Earth, Moon, Venus, Mars) - Do the 'patrol' mode button on each of the four planets - Do the big 'Strike' mission on each of the four planets - Play Crucible and win games, get kills, that type of stuff. Just like CoD MP XP leveling.
Yeah, I got that part. I pretty much leveled right up to 20 without evening opening up Mars, and only doing one mission on Venus. Pretty easy, no problems with following along there. I also had no clue what the story was about, as I didn't really do the story missions in order. I jumped around a bit. No big deal. It's sci fi. The story seems like a Halo redo anyways.
Level 20 Plus
This part confuses me. I get it that XP doesn't matter anymore. What levels me up now is getting 'armor' that has Light attributes attached within it. Armor being the helmet, gloves, Chest thingy, and boots. I'm good. But i have two main questions. One, where do I find this armor? And two, how do I go about getting better weapons? So where to go? It would appear I have these options to go when looking at my Millenium Falcon spaceship in orbit:
- Earth - Moon - Venus - Mars - Some asteroid belt - Queen thingy - Crucible Playlist - Vanguard Playlist: 4 options here: Eagle (18), Viper (20), Wolf (22), Tiger (24) - Three Icons on the far left of the screen: 1) Playlist-?, 2) Daily Strike, 3) Weekly Strike (22)
It would appear looking at the last two up there, ...IF I go to those playlist, the rewards seem to consist mainly of Vanguard Marks and Vanguard Reputation. For example, I did the above Vanguard Playlist Eagle Strike mission (18) on normal, did it solo. The screen says I would get 0 Vanguard Mark Pts and 10 Vanguard Rep Pts. Ok. Fine. I guess I got some Vanguard Rep points. Where is this listed? When I look on my Character screen, my Character screen shows me now with 13 Vanguard Mark Pts.
So this leaves some questions.
1. What do I go play? Can I do it solo? Or do I need bros? 2. What do the Vanguard Mark Pts and Vanguard Rep Pts do? 3. I see this QuarterMaster bro hanging out in my tower condo. He sells Legendary bad ass armor. How do I get this stuff?
I also have questions on all this engram stuff and all these materials I keep collecting. What's the point here?

Thanks.
Not really looking for a guide, but more like what playlist should I do? (I will read those, as long as they aren't to complicated) I went to play last night solo, and then realized....I have no clue on where to go to find what I need. None whatsoever.
Edit. Good read. I understand it a bit better now.
Leads me to this question:
Which of the Strike missions can I do solo? Like if I do solo, which do you recommend?
Planetary Strike missions? Heroic Weekly/Daily strike missions? Strike Playlist Missions? (18.20.22.24)

Before reading what I am about to say, keep in mind that I have not made a serious attempt to level past 20 yet. Due to my limited play time and inability to effectively party with friends, my current goal is to take it really slow and push all my 3 characters to level 20 (I know that this can be fast tracked, I just choose to do it the slow way so I can have plenty of time to understand the classes/subclasses better). That said, below are my notes: 1) denkirson.proboards.com/thread/7311/destiny-leveling-discussion . Read my OP (which I will try to update from time to time) to get the gist of how leveling works, and read the subsequent posts for advice; 2) Bare bone weekly goals: a) earn Vanguard Marks to weekly max (100), b) earn Crucible Marks to weekly max (100); 3) How to reach a)? You can play the Strike playlists, daily/weekly Nightfall missions, etc. To find these, check the blue exclamation points on the map; 4) How to reach b)? Just play Crucible playlists; 5) The Queen's Wrath event is going on, you should play whatever you can from that. See this post for more details: hsv1.boards.net/thread/305/queens-wraith-legendary-gear-shards6) Last but not the least: if you can party with friends, always prefer that than going solo (sadly I can't do that until mid October). This will make the experience much more enjoyable, and you can earn things at much faster rate. There are a lot more things you can do, but I suspect the things mentioned above are more than enough for you to burn your weekly game time "quota" . If you can get all of the above done and still have time to kill, you can always "explore", farm the cave, etc.

What I wrote earlier might be too complicated. For an action oriented list of suggestions, you can consider the following:
1) Complete Daily story mission; 2) Play Strike playlists. It has several flavors at different levels: 18, 20, 22, 24. Always play the highest one you can manage; 3) If you hit 100 Vanguard Mark weekly limit, switch to Crucible; 4) While doing the above, work on "Queen's Wrath" bounties at the same time if possible;
Things will get more interesting once you get to level 24 (lvl24 strike playlist, Queen's Wrath relative stuff, etc)

I'll be on. You should really get a couple of the Queens bounties done so you can do a couple of her missions. Guaranteed legendary gear that will level you up fast, 18 light each and super easy to get some of the missions done. Can get a helmet, chest piece, and sniper that is bad ass. I think Mal is in the same boat, has some bounties done but needs to do the missions.
I really need to run the weeklies with a couple guys and would really like to do heroic but need 6 guys, really needing shards, coins, motes of light and a little vanguard points, but can't do them myself.

I can play any night. Not every night, but with a little notice, I can get on.
I am going to be soon pushing/prodding/and kicking more HSV1 guys to get grouped up with my weekly XBL messages. Starting that this weekend. All the CoD Ghosts stuff is done.

I did a few Queen's bounties but seems to me that the next step is locked with level gate 24. Saggy: if I understand correctly, this means that I need to reach level 24 first before I can get these "guaranteed legendary gear"?

I am still confused between the Strike missions.
There's the Strike missions on the left side of the map: Daily and Weekly Strikes. There's the Strike Mission Playlist on the right under 'Vanguard'. That has the 4 strikes: Eagle-18, Viper-20, Wolf-22 &Tiger-24 There's the Strike Mission icons on the four planets (Earth, Moon, Venus, Mars). Each Planet has a strike mission.
Do each of the above options also have settings for Normal, Hard and Heroic?
I did the above Eagle-18 mission as a solo player. I am not sure what it set on? I think Normal? It was hard, and took me a while, but I got it done. I have 13 Vanguard Marks, but looking at my cheat sheet, that mission didn't give me any. Only rep points. I am still not sure where my 'REp' points are located.
It seems like I cant' get people to play with me, as I am too low level (most everyone I know is in mid to high 20's). Which of the above can I do solo? Recommendations?

I think they recommend 24, but I solo completed 2 missions at level 23 to earn my first legendaries. Just aim for the Earth or Moon missions. Once the mission launches, you can return to orbit if you don't like the mission. You don't lose anything and can immediately respool a new mission.

Stone, I recommend trying the strike options on the right side (where you choose level 18, 20, 22, or 24). Try at least level 20 - it should match you up with two other players, and you'll earn the Vanguard rewards.
I'll be on around 2 PT this afternoon, and could help you.

Which of the above can I do solo? Recommendations? We are in the same boat . Below are my understanding of the different options: a) The Strikes selectable from the planets: these have pre-defined level requirements (e.g.: the one on the earth is level 8). After you reach level 20, most (if not all) of them will be way below your level and therefore should be easy (maybe too easy) for you; When to play this: 1) you are playing the Strike for the very first time; 2) you want to have a very easy time completing it (e.g.: when you are trying to do the bounty of completing a Strike without dying); c) you want to play with (and/or carry) a low level friend; You can play these Strikes either with a Fireteam or going in solo. If you go in solo, the matchmaking system will find 2 random teammates for you. If they leave in the middle of the game, the matchmaking system will attempt to find replacements. Until it does, you will play the Strike shorthanded; Rewards: you mainly get XP from these. Not very impressive for level 20. b) The Strike playlists, with levels at 18, 20, 22, and 24 respectively; I have not tried this yet, my understanding is that it will rotate through different Strikes at random, and set the level at 18/20/22/24. When to play this: when you want to play Strikes with the right challenge level. Say you are at level 20: you can play at 20 for "normal", 22 if you want to challenge yourself, 24 if you want to attempt the impossible, and 18 if you just want to have a relatively easy but still interesting time (vs option a: which might be too easy to the point of uninteresting); Rewards: the higher level you play, the more impressive the rewards are. So you want to play at the highest level on which you still enjoy playing; Matchmaking is supported so you can go in solo; c) The daily/weekly missions Again I have not played these myself. If I understand correctly, The dailies are story missions with modifiers and the weeklies are strike missions with modifiers. The modifiers will make these missions more difficult and therefore more interesting. However, level 20 is probably too low to enjoy these; I was told that Matchmaking is NOT supported. So if you want to play this you need to party up; Rewards: these are supposed to offer even more impressive rewards.

Great post Witty. That made sense. I'm getting it now, slowly.... I made some small edits to the dailies / weeklies. The gist is that level 20 might be too low to play them, and they require partying up. As mal pointed out: if you are solo, go for the Strike playlists. Start at level 20, and adjust either up or down accordingly.

I will try to join you guys if possible. The 3 of us have similar goals (well, mal is much more advanced, so relatively speaking ) so we should make a good fire team. Don't wait for me though if you manage to get a 3rd player. My play time is still undeterministic at the moment.

My understanding is that I need to know hit the pavement and grind out Vanguard Mark pts and Vanguard Rep pts. Doing those will add to my totals, and then at some point, I can go purchase purple/Legendary guns from the Vanguard Quartermaster. You need both though. You need 'reputation' as well. My understanding is that Legendary and Exotics are crucial, for doing things like Vault of Glass.
I could also get lucky and find an engram, which when taking it back to Xur?, he decodes and it 'might' be a Legendary weapon?
To upgrade those guns, I am going to have to find Ascendent Shards?
As far as leveling up my Light Armor, getting from level 21 to high 20's....I need to find the armor. I guess this will just pop up as rewards as I play strike missions?
I need to keep getting XP points, as this will keep leveling up my VoidWalker and SunSinger sub classes. But XP will come easy as I do strike, so just playing will resolve this one.
Can you play today at 2pm PT
Sorry for highlighting your post, I thought I was doing it to a copy and paste...hit the wrong button.

You are getting warmer towards understanding this rather complex leveling system To level up, you need armor pieces with Lights, not the weapons (but of course, more powerful weapons mean more power to you! , so you need them as well, just not tied to the leveling. Also, keep in mind that weapons are transferable across classes, while armor pieces are class specific). Legendary (purple) and exotic (gold?) pieces definitely have lights, while rare (blue) items may or may not have lights. You can get the armor pieces in 3 main ways: 1) random drops; 2) rewards for completing something; (e.g.: kill orders from Queen's Wrath); 3) Purchase from vendors. To do this you need to first meet the "rank" requirement (which is gained by accumulating enough reputations), and then have enough currency to buy them. Check each vendor in the tower for offerings; Your ultimate goal is get a complete armor set of 3 legendaries and 1 exotic (because you can only have 1 exotic equipped at one time). Once you have these, you can gain more lights from them through upgrading. To do that, you need materials. The hardest one to get is "Ascendant Shards".
