Analysis & Thoughts
I am going to test a theory that has been brewing in my head for quite some time. The theory is this: Did many early front running clans not understand how to pace themselves in this contest? Did they not understand that this was a 26 mile marathon to the finish, and instead think this was a sprint? Did they maybe get exposed as basically being the type of runners in a marathon (to use that sport's analogy) that sprint to an early position in the race to get in front of the lights & cameras, only to pull up with cramps or some other mishap later?

What I have below is the final Top-20 compared to a Top-20 list from June 5th. What is interesting when comparing them is the sheer number of clans that never made it to the finish line. Take note of the second list. I have the clans that faded/never finished lined out in the ranking. My hunch was correct. While we knew Clan Wars could be brutal, it is pretty amazing to see that twelve of the early 6/5 top-20 clans never made it to the finish line on September 22nd. It would appear most just faded due to losing players and/or just simply not being able to effectively compete anymore. There were also a few clans (mostly bigger) who did the dramatic "WE'RE QUITTING" announcement, formally pulling out of the competition, while giving various reasons for it. Keep in mind this while scanning the list below. The 6/5 TOP-20 list is already also missing some early front-running clans like RedditBlack, DoomClanElite, AdversityWars, & StraightToTheDome (looking at an April top 20 list). These four had already dropped out in late April/early May.
So when you toss in those four clans to the mix, the reality is that almost 80% of the early leaders in this Clan War season pulled out before the end. We'll put an * there as Team Bezerkers got reset, so they didn't actively seek out their drop from the leaderboards. None the less, we are still talking fifteen early leaders dropping out.
What gives? This goes back to the original question at the top. Did clans misjudge their management process? Not understand how to pace themselves? Or did they simply not understand that this contest was going to be going on until the fall? Hard to believe that was a reason, as it was clearly indicated how long it would go on. But maybe not? Who knows. EDIT - Also have to consider that it was just brutally hard to keep players interested in a game that died a quick death (Ghosts). That reason probably didn't need to be stated (stating the obvious), but let's list that too. So it's hard to say and we'll probably never know. Most clans that did the 'official' announcement of leaving left public statements that were pretty vague on the 'why' they left.
