So here's the official recap, of the just completed Diamond War (#8)
Where to start? We finished 3rd. We finished third out of seven clans. On the surface, this might seem like a failure, but it's not. It's far from it. I am in fact viewing this clan war as mostly a success. There are a lot extenuating circumstances going on with that third place finish we had. The two circumstances?
- The first is that this was a VERY hard pool we were in. Going into the contest, this bracket had four clans ranked in the top 100 of all CoD clans. That's the top 100 out of 30,000 or so Diamond clans. One of which, FUF, was ranked 21st in the entire world. And again, this is Diamond. There is a survival of the fittest going on in Diamond. If you go this far (top 100) as a clan, there tends to be a reason. Mental fortitude. You punch these clans, they punch back harder. The clans are mentally tough. Their makeup tends to be a bit stronger, less quit than those in Bronze/Platinum. Those Bronze/Platinum clans don't have that. They are there mostly for a reason - they couldn't deal with Diamond. So we had that going on when we started this CW......a really tough bracket (but then again, at this stage, they are all tough!)
- The second circumstance is the scoring. We got hosed a bit in rounds two and three this past clan war. Long story short, about 1/3 to 1/2 of our point scoring players, their 'wins' were NOT registering on the clan app. A group of six finished a game, all point scorers, and only four wins were counting. Group after group, this was happening. What should have been 85 to 90% participation, ended up being around 50% participation over the last two rounds. That's REALLY tough to deal with. I am working on finding a reason this happened, but right now, it looks like because we added players back in on Friday and Saturday, that appears to have glitched the system, causing the Beachhead coding to not recognize who was scoring.
The above mattered. When we were playing 80 to 90% participation, we were winning. We straight up won round 1, beating all the other clans and had a nice 32 pt lead going into Saturday night. Sat night, with 50% participation (due to the Beachhead errors, and some of our own mistakes), we broke down. We fell behind and round 2 lost us this clan war. Below is the round by round scoring, one can see the results. You can see our 56 pt round 2 score killed us.
Clan Name.......R1+R1B= Total.....R2+R2B= Total....Sum.......R3+R3B= Total.....ENDING SCORE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. FUF......................143 + 29 = 172.........177 + 106 = 283........455.............169 + 75 = 244..................699 2. PallBearers.........110 + 60 = 170..........142 + 48 = 190.........360...............89 + 46 = 135...................495 3. HSV1...................110 + 92 = 202.............56 + 00 = 56..........258................98 + 44 = 142..................400 4. ArtofWar............00 + 00 = 00...............28 + 24 = 54............54.................00 + 00 = 00......................54 5. TeamRise................15 + 0 = 15................00 + 00 = 00.............15................00 + 00 = 00.......................15 6. TheKilljoys.............00 + 0 = 00................00 + 00 = 00............00................00 + 00 = 00......................00 7. TheSealsClan.........00 + 0 = 00................00 + 00 = 00............00................00 + 00 = 00......................00
* R1+R1B = Round 1 base score, and then R1B = the overnight hold bonus.
The positive to the above? Unlike the last clan war where we finished 3rd (back in April), this time no one bickered or fought. No one was stiring up fights in the background. It seemed like everyone stayed in good spirits. Props to everyone. Better yet, we had like 18 to 24 people show up to fight it out on Sunday night (round 3), even though on paper we had no chance to get 1st. People hung in there. And the round 3 results showed it. Looking up at the above chart, we outplayed the 2nd place clan 142-135, ....and we did so with only around half our people's wins counting due to the Beachhead coding issues. That's some nutting up there. Nice job.
Another nice result was some of our new guys. Some of them played really well. And of course, a number of our vets did what they always do. Good job everyone on that front. Especially again, Sunday night. I know my squad had a great night. On paper, we looked pretty weak when we got started. I was worried, as we hadn't really played before as a squad. So then we went 2-2 over our first four Dom games. It looked a bit bleak. But then shit kicked in, we actually rattled off a stretch where we went 15-1 over sixteen games. And we beat MANY six-party opponent clans along the way. A lot of KC, HC-TDM and DropZone playing in that mix, games modes we don't play a lot, and especially my group, who hadn't played together before. I was pumped, I had a games where I grabbed 39, 37, and 34 tags in KC! Also watched new(er) clan member DaveyJones roll up a 3-kill lmg shot on some opponents in his one clip, to win a HC-TDM game 75-74. Fucking unbelievable!! Can you get a better game ending killcam? Hell no!! Some great games, all night long.
All in all, our 3rd place finish plus some bonus points will get us Diamond Leaderboard points. We aren't going to move up the rankings, but I highly doubt we will drop much when the rankings come out on Thursday. I'm going to guess we'll maintain our present position of being ranked anywhere from #50 to #65....out of all 30,000 Diamond clans. We are still right there, in our quest to get to the top. Within striking distance. What more can you ask for? Not much.
There's only like two months left in this clan war season, maybe four, maybe five ClanWars left. It's not many. It will end in September. Everyone on this ride right now, you don't get to many opportunities like this in life. To be ranked this high in a world wide contest like this. This is pretty unique. There will be around 130,000 clans who tried to do this, and right now, we are at the cusp of the top 50!!! Embrace it and go for it!!!

If you look at my twitter feed, I did talk to FelixGallo this morning about the roster lock issue. Unfortunately, I am a bit more confused now than before. Here is the conversation below. I guess I should say bits of the conversation, as many pieces are missing. Twitter is hard to follow a conversation.
I still don't think he understands what happened. But what I do know, is one example. AmazonBlonde's scores/wins did not count all weekend. Which is a bit perplexing, as she was one of the initial people who played on Friday.
This is only part of it below....(there are other bits missing) ====================================================================
TheColdLoad @thecoldload · 4h @beachheadstudio @felixgallo I tried getting help from Beachhead on Sat & Sun This affected our ClanWar.
felixgallo @felixgallo · 34m @thecoldload @beachheadstudio sounds like the clan population lock. Give me an example gamertag.
TheColdLoad @thecoldload · 33m @felixgallo I think this is one example. amazonblonde69
felixgallo @felixgallo · 25m @thecoldload you have 14 distinct unique players in your clan lock and amazon is definitely not one of them. So that's what is happening.
@thecoldload sounds like some of the players you switched out won a game before getting switched out, which reserves that spot in the lock.
TheColdLoad @thecoldload · 22m @felixgallo But we didn't switch out. We started at 7:00pmET with primary players. never dropped them. Only added people later.
felixgallo @felixgallo · 12m @thecoldload understood. The rule is simple: if after matchmaking, a person wins, they take up a permanent slot in the clan lock.
felixgallo @felixgallo · 12m @thecoldload there is no way for someone to 'leave' the lock, no substitution. Matchmaking happens sometime after 11pm Pacific night b4.
TheColdLoad @thecoldload · 11m @felixgallo Is there a way for you to show me, who our 'locked' people were?
felixgallo @felixgallo · 9m @thecoldload not trivially (they're stored in the lock as ids, not names, and it's a different database for names).
felixgallo @felixgallo · 9m @thecoldload bit busy today, 2 clan wars ending, but hit me up midweek.
TheColdLoad @thecoldload · 9m @felixgallo Will do. I will follow this up on Thursday. Will that work?
felixgallo @felixgallo · 8m @thecoldload yep

It sounds like for the future it would be best to not re-add people until Sunday morning.

Yeah. Most definitely. The only downside is by adding sooner like we did, people complain less. It's a no win situation.

It's a no win situation until we win no really though most of the vets know the drill already. Cut clan size to the number of people who plan to participate. The new people are the only ones who seem confused about it. They will figure it out soon enough or jump off the bandwagon. I like the idea for 2 teams of 6 next clan war and re-add Sunday night.

My two cents worth, maybe I shouldn't give it but.....who are the ones complaining? Have they helped out in the clan wars? There are names on the clan list that I don't know, have never played with and have never seen helping out during clan wars. I know I'm not the best player here but I do show up for every clan war and I believe those people shouldn't be in the clan. I know of two specifically but I won't name any oh names.

It's ok, everyone's opinion's are valid. There is no right answer here, just a bunch of different opinions. Here's my thoughts on that, to answer your questions. Just my opinion here.
One. Who is complaining? I'll give a recent example. We had two recently added new(er) people who sent me nasty emails last weekend because I 'cut' them. Never-mind the half dozen XBoxLive emails I sent them (last week) explaining what I was doing with the 2 day drop. Apparently they didn't understand them, or probably never read them. Let's also give a big old never-mind to the fact that neither were even remotely involved with helping with the clan war. So they left. Oh well. I'll forget them in a week.
Two. I personally don't care if someone helps a lot or doesn't help at all with the clan wars. That's why we started the two day drop thing. So everyone can find a home here. You want the thrill of competing against the best clans in the CoD world? You have that option. You got a low KD and want to compete against Lethal Gaming? You got a home here. You need some time off? You have a home. You hate ClanWars and just want some like-minded CoD players to casually game with? You have a home here. For that matter, I don't even want it to be all about CoD. I want a fun place where people can find like-minded playing people for all types of games. That's why we put the two day drop in to make ALL the above possible. Make everyone happy. Which is the frustrating thing with these whiners/quitters we have had. The two-day drop HELPS them, allows them to have the best of both worlds and remain in the clan. If they pulled what they did with most any other top 100 clans...they wouldn't last a day (let alone they would have never gotten in, as they don't have a high enough KD)
Three. Regarding newer people in the clan. Let me say this by first going back in time a bit. A few months ago ex-clan member wrote me some nasty emails from the fake account he was using to spy on us. He made fun of this group for having shitty players. Basically between insults to me, he was making fun of this group, saying we have no standards in regards to some of our member's skill levels. Those in the clan and those being added. A bunch of low KD scrubs as he called it.
And you know what? Regarding his views on adding people? Why should I or anyone here care who is being added? It doesn't matter. I am really not putting a second thought as to who is added to the clan anymore. If someone wants in, I add them. If someone puts in an online application, I add them. If a clan member wants to add his friend, he's added. If some schmoe off the street says he wants in, I add him. You have a pulse and hold a controller, you are in. Here's why it doesn't matter. The people who don't fit, aren't in the right place, or can't cut the stress of competing, ......they aren't hurting anything. They also tend to disappear after being two-day dropped once or twice anyways. It works. It sorts itself out. Cream rises via the auto-correct.
Reality? It doesn't matter how many flaky people join (and quit). Forty people join this month and 37 quit? Doesn't matter. All that matters is the three people who stayed. The way I see it, every friend you have on your friend list now, started out as some random 'add' at some point in the past. It's all just a numbers game. And new numbers are needed, as people come & go with the wind changing. Loyalty is a tricky thing over CoD. Everyone views it differently.
Some people might find the above silly. Some may find it smart. Either way, I'm going to be consistent and loyal to those who have stuck by the process. Last November 15th, I got this clan stuff rolling again and made it quite clear that I had ever intention of driving this clan into the top 25 of all CoD clans in the world. I'm not going to stop now. Not with just two months to go. Say what you want about me, but I'm not a quitter. One who is going to turtle up over the 'stress' of playing a mildly competitive CoD game. And anyone who wants to join me, you know you can count on me to do whatever it takes. I'll have your back.

You're right, I shouldn't care about who is added or how/if they participate. I'm just upset that my wins didn't count all weekend and they should have as I was never dropped. But shit happens and it probably wouldn't have made a difference to the outcome but then again it might have. We'll never know.

I hear you on your wins, that issue. I guess you read my conversation with Felix up there?
I am completely lost as to why your wins didn't count. You were in our starting group when we started playing at 7pmET. I saw you there. Your account was active. How could you wins not count? When things got going, we were also -1 under the cap of our bucket, so it wasn't like someone bumped you out.
You are right....we will never know. That is frustrating.
Maybe Felix will find an answer for us. I think he will. He does talk to me now (he knows who I am) and he is one of the higher-ups at Beachhead. Maybe there is an answer in there. But there is nothing they can do about last weekend. Well, maybe there is. Maybe they can toss us a bone and give us the 2nd place points? I'll find out. We need to find out what exactly caused this error first.
edit - Your wins may not have counted, but your effort/helping most certainly did count. That's what really matters.
