Microsoft recently opened up the Xbox One and de-coupled the kinetic's share of the processing power, and by doing so, is going to give developers the ability to decide how they want to allocate the power. They want to incorporate the Kinect? They can. They don't want to use it and instead, use that power for graphics and/or performance, they can do that too.
This link below apparently comes from Destiny's developers, who have decided to use this new freedom. Any slight performance or graphic gap, that might have existed on some games, that debate might be a thing of the past for most all games.

That's great news.
For MP games, it is actually more important to have 60 FPS than 1080P. However, there are lots of non-MP players out there would prefer their Single Player experience to be visually stunning. I believe that this is the main reason why Watch Dogs sales on PS4 more than doubled XONE.
If Destiny can do it with this new approach, then I don't see why other games can't do it. As developers become more familiar with the new hardware and have more software tools to squeeze the processing power, hopefully the gap can become smaller.

I think the whole graphics thing is a nonstory. I have never understood it. I have seen the PS4 and XB1 up close on a few games. I couldn't really see a difference, putting one game in, and then putting in the other version of the game a few minutes later. I honestly think the graphics difference on most games, can only be seen when the games are actually viewable side by side. And then you have to look hard. That's my experience and imho the above is a media story, not a player issue (PS fanboys would crucify me for saying that)
But even if one could see a micro difference in a few pixels, shading or lighting effects, does it really matter? No. It never has. We all play games at all times with varying levels of resolution and never even notice or care. I never cared that the 360 was +/- 3.2% better or worse graphics than the PS3. They both looked good. Same with PC games. Did I, or most all players, ever care that much to go out and spend another $200 so my graphics on a game could look 1.45% better? No. We all play with what we have.
The problem is the media, backed by Sony, has fooled people into thinking that it IS an issue. The duped the public. And that's no shame on Sony's part, as Microsoft would have done the same thing if they had a perceived advantage. You find an opening and go for the kill. That's what they do.
