The wife and I decided to buy Minecraft for our six year old. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The main problem is that the game is massively addictive. The wife and I are currently fighting over who gets to play. Does anyone have any suggestions to start off right, as we have died on the first night several times now. Also, when I die does all the work I did get lost forever or do I have to just find it again? I made an awesome house but died shortly after.

Heavy, here is what I do.
Spawn Immediately start cutting wood (need to get somewhere around 30 - 50 pieces) Make planks / sticks / builder's block Make wood shovel, ax, pick ax. Move towards mountains (DO NOT GO INTO CAVE!), remember to bring builder's block Dig out an area on side of mountain that I can spend 1st night. Now make STONE SWORD and Pick-ax. Explore nearby areas and expand your living space in the cave.
Days 1 and 2 you are looking for CORE materials. These are, coal, wool, iron, papyrus (or whatever the thing you need for paper is called) and wood. Everything else will come naturally. Your 1st living space will most likely not be your last.
When you die, the stuff you were carrying is dropped and everything you did up until that point is saved. But your stuff disappears, meaning you have lost your map, which of course is the all most important thing you start out with.
Some other things you might be interested in: Once you make a bed (thus the need for wool) you will then respawn there if you die. Travel lite. Don't carry all your goodies with you when you are out exploring. On your map the Y axis tells you how high you are from the bottom of the game. At lvl 12-20 you will find Diamonds, red stone and blue stone. Lvl 18-25ish you will find gold.
I would suggest starting over again, you really need the map. You can start in peaceful mode (no enemies), but that kind of ruins the fun of the game, but it will at least give you an opportunity to learn the ropes.
You are right, it is fun and quite addictive. I DL'd the latest update, but have yet to play it.

Now my son will not stop talking about Skylander. I looked it up on Amazon and there are many, many different ones. Can anyone give insight in the world of Skylander?

Hippie and Mamma Hippie are hooked on Minecrack! Sorry, I thought it was the dumbest game when my oldest bought it and then I tried it. Addictive! One thing that helps Hippie is to save often also if you want to you can not re-spawn after you die which takes you to the main menu and you just start all over with your map and whatever was in your inventory. But any progress is lost. That's good if you have been mining diamonds and have those or diamond enchanted tools in your inventory and you decide to swim in lava.

Skylanders:
The core game comes with a thingy that hooks up to your Xbox and a few characters pieces. Each game in the series will come with new character pieces. You put the the character pieces on the thingy that hooks up to the Xbox before you play (it is like a little stage or something and lights up). This tells the Xbox which character you are playing as. It is a 3rd person RPG type of game, where the kids need to solve puzzles and defeat monsters and collect stuff to move on to the next part of the map. It is ok for kids, but there is mild violence. In addition, they always want to play with the characters as if they are toys. There is a chip in each of character things
Not great for adults, but fun for kids

FYI: Minecraft for XONE (and PS4) is coming in August for $19.99. If you already have it for X360 (PS3), you can get XONE (PS3) version for $4.99. Also, everything you did in X360 (PS3) are transferable to XONE (PS4).

Thanks Witty. I am not even sure if I will ever get the new generation of consoles. Maybe after another price drop.
